The Point of Departure: Ink, Form, and Space

Hu Shourong, Figure Study
Figure Study 1985 Xuan paper, 84 × 48.5 cm

Ink, form, and space establish the framework of the image.

Tonal variation, wetness and dryness, speed, pause, and unpainted space shape direction, visual weight, and spatial depth. Line establishes boundaries, ink layers open space, and unpainted areas preserve shifts in density and breathing room.

Figures, the human body, and natural forms emerge through variations, turns, and unpainted intervals in ink. Contour, ink masses, and calligraphic brushwork shape form.
